Track your Distributed Learning activities based on the 70-20-10 model using Experience API (xAPI)

Most of the dated e-learning training content was developed using the standards like SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) or AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee). SCORM is a set of technical rules established by a standards body like ADL (Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative) and is supported by most e-learning software products. It was a de facto industry standard for e-learning interoperability.

SCORM governs how online learning content and Learning Management System (LMS) communicate with each other.  It is like a TV station which telecasts the program content using standards like ATSC, DUB, ISBM, and DTMB.  SCORM standard helped in reducing the cost of extracting useful user interaction data from the content consumption itself. However, the focus of SCORM was on formal training. With the advent of the fast internet and universal access came a plethora of new online resources like MOOCs, Youtube came informal learning. To support informal learning and track learning anywhere a new standard had to be indented, xAPI was born.

xAPI – Future of SCORM

The next generation of SCROM is here. It is called the Experience API(xAPI). xAPI is a huge leap forward for the e-learning community. It can be used to track and support all e-learning experiences, including social interactions and on-the-job training, which is the core of the 70:20:10 model of distributed learning.

xAPI and 70:20:10 model

When learner’s learning experiences, including social and on-the-job development, get it recorded using xAPI. It offers many advantages. Learners complete learning record can be used for future references. It helps to understand the areas where learning takes place. It finds gaps which need to fill in. It makes a new learner aware of positive education.

xAPI closes gaps between informal and formal learning programs. It gives you an opportunity to blend social and work-based learning into formal training programs. xAPI makes tracking of informal learning easy and helps you measure learning outcomes more precisely.
